About Buds

A year ago, your sister passed away, and moving on has been difficult. You recently moved to a new city, Hitachinaka, in order to get a fresh start. You're not the best at meeting new people and making friends, but you know this will help you heal from your loss in the long run.

This game was made as part of the University of California, Santa Cruz Game Design Art Collaboration (GDA). It was awarded the World Building Award at the 2020 UCSC Games Showcase.

About My Role

I joined Buds as a Character Concept Artist, Asset Artist, and Background Artist. My initial design for Shiori was chosen to represent what they would look like. Creating concept art and art assets was a continuous cycle of team feedback and iteration. All assets were created in Clip Studio Paint and Photoshop.

Character Concept Art

I created concept art for the retail friend character. I had a lot of fun thinking of what their outfits might look like, and how to match the game's 80's anime vibe.

Silver Fox

The Silver Fox character was cut out of the game to reduce the scope.

CG Art

I worked with several other artists to create art for the dream sequence in the game. I thought about how I could give the scene a dreamy look while also sticking to lighter, pastel-like colors.

Background Art

I was in charge of rendering the bookstore background. I worked with several artists to bring this background to life, and I'm really happy with how it came out after I rendered it.

Assets

I drew a couple of assets for the game, including the watering can and cyclamen flower assets. The player uses the watering can to water the flowers in the game to increase their friendship level.
